The age of sharing grainy, low-res photos is long behind us. Having friends or family with different phone brands than your own can lead to all manner of everyday nuisances, from attempts to help navigate unfamiliar settings to coming up short when you need a compatible charger. One such problem can arise when sharing photos and videos across these devices, particularly between Android and iPhone.
While sharing media across brands has always been relatively intuitive, preserving quality hasn’t always been straightforward. Traditionally, sending a photo from an Android device to an iPhone would compress image quality due to differences in messaging systems: Apple uses Short Message Service (SMS) texting, while Android uses Rich Communication Services (RCS). Fortunately, with iOS 18, RCS support was introduced on iPhones, allowing users to access higher-quality images via RCS.
To use RCS, iPhone users should ensure it is enabled. This can be checked in Settings > Apps > Messages, where RCS Messaging should be toggled green. On the Android side, Google Messages compresses photos by default; users should press the HD or HD+ button before sending to maintain quality.
For videos and larger images, compression remains a concern, and file sizes may exceed RCS’s 100MB limit. Options include email, alternative messaging services, Google Photos (by selecting 'Send in Google Photos'), or Google Drive. Additionally, Android Quick Share now supports AirDrop on compatible Pixel and Samsung devices, offering a seamless transfer method.
For non-AirDrop devices, users can tap 'Use QR Code' in Quick Share and have an iPhone user scan the code.
